STORY TELLING TECHNIQUES

TARA Foundation students learn story-telling techniques, as a means of improving communication skills.

Stories bring facts to life, make the abstract concrete and, through meaning making, walk the listener through the mind of the scientist or mathematician (Ellis, 2005) to understand the value and application of such concepts. Wells (1986) argued that storytelling is a fundamental approach of meaning making. Community participation helps youth become empathetic citizens who could potentially continue similar work when they become adults. Additionally, youth who give back to their communities develop leadership skills, learn the importance of helping, and gain work experiences.

Benefits of storytelling in early childhood education includes :

  • Improved language skills
  • Heightened memory
  • Fosters imaginative, creative thinking and cognitive skills. …
  • Encourages enthusiasm for learning, writing and reading. …
  • Develops cultural and moral understanding.
  • Better communication skills
  • Increases curiosity and imagination. …
  • Emphasizes focus and social skills.

Students with language barriers struggle with conversing with other people due to the lack of practicing any language other than their mother tongue.  These children, not only keep to themselves in school, but also don’t perform well in their academics, as they often find themselves at a dead end on how they can improve. TARA finds story-telling to be an excellent solution to this problem. This way, students are taught how to structure narratives effectively, and convey their ideas and emotions in a coherent and engaging manner.

We conduct interactive workshops that exposes students to the art of storytelling. These workshops covers areas on storytelling techniques, character development, voice modulation, and engaging the audience. Experienced storytellers who can work closely with students are brought in to provide personalized guidance, feedback, and support. Mentors like these, help students refine their storytelling techniques, identify areas for improvement, and offer strategies to enhance students’ narrative skills. Students are also provided with storytelling exercises and prompts that encourage them to create and share their own stories. Our students find these exercises useful when it comes to how to communicate their thoughts and ideas to other people. They are also taught the importance of conveying a message appropriately, for better understanding of their listeners.
