Eye Screening at SJKT Kinrara by LionsClub in collaboration with TARA

Stories bring facts to life, make the abstract concrete and, through meaning making, walk the listener through the mind of the scientist or mathematician (Ellis, 2005) to understand the value and application of such concepts. Wells (1986) argued that storytelling is a fundamental approach of meaning making. Community participation helps youth become empathetic citizens who could potentially continue similar work when they become adults. Additionally, youth who give back to their communities develop leadership skills, learn the importance of helping, and gain work experiences.

Benefits of storytelling in early childhood education includes :

  • Improved language skills
  • Heightened memory
  • Fosters imaginative, creative thinking and cognitive skills. …
  • Encourages enthusiasm for learning, writing and reading. …
  • Develops cultural and moral understanding.
  • Better communication skills
  • Increases curiosity and imagination. …
  • Emphasizes focus and social skills.

On the 28th of November, LionsClub, an incorporated non-profit organization, joined hands with the TARA Foundation to conduct an essential eye screening project at SJKT Kinrara school. This collaborative effort aimed to assess and address the eye health of students, ensuring early detection and intervention where necessary. A total of 33 students participated in the eye screening, with preliminary results revealing that one student requires no further action, while another needs to consult with a specialist for a more in-depth assessment. LionsClub has taken the responsibility to facilitate the required specialist appointment for the identified student, with the aim of completing this process by the 10th of December. The proactive approach taken by LionsClub and TARA Foundation in organizing this eye screening project reflects their commitment to the well-being of the community, particularly the schoolchildren from SJKT Kinrara. Recognizing the importance of timely interventions in eye health, the organizations are dedicated to ensuring that every student receives the necessary care and attention. Furthermore, LionsClub has committed to providing the screening results to the students before their year-end school holiday. This timely delivery allows for any recommended follow-up actions or treatments to be initiated promptly, contributing to the overall health and academic well-being of the students. The success of this initiative is made possible through the generous support of donors and individuals who believe in the noble cause championed by LionsClub and TARA Foundation. The collaboration serves as a testament to the positive impact that can be achieved when organizations and foundations come together for the betterment of the community. LionsClub and TARA Foundation’s joint effort in organizing the eye screening at SJKT Kinrara school signifies a commitment to community health and well-being. By providing essential eye care services, these organizations contribute significantly to the overall development and success of the students involved, fostering a healthier and brighter future for the community at large.
