OUR 5 PILLARS
Education – Education is probably the most powerful tool available to mankind today to empower people. At TARA Foundation, we believe children are the leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, the importance of providing quality and critical Early Intervention is our Priority thinking education for children starting from Primary 1 is of utmost importance.
Economic Empowerment – When the families are economically empowered, they have the skills to determine their own future and that of their children as well. Our findings show that a large percentage of people in the B40 community do not have the correct information or guidance to start small businesses or even home businesses. This stems from the fact that many of them have little or no education at all about economic empowerment.
Welfare – The welfare and well-being of the family to that children come from play a huge role in ensuring a child’s performance and productivity. Therefore, providing the necessary support to care for the families of these children is of utmost importance. Ensuring that there is food on the table for every meal is paramount. The recent Covid 19 pandemic has laid bare, very serious issues. Many of the adults in B40 areas are daily-wage earners and their livelihood were drastically affected.
Good Governance – Built upon a framework for a high-performing organization that exhibits transparency, accountability, and responsibility, we aim to unlock new opportunities in the coming years to improve performance and productivity, and become sustainable. With the adaption of good governance within the foundation, we are able to anticipate, prevent and adapt to risks that may threaten our ability to fulfill our social obligations effectively and with responsibility and compassion. Moving forward, TARA Foundation aims to develop into a world-class organization with a high degree of governance, talent, integrity and transparency.
Advocacy – TARA FOUNDATION upholds the importance of promoting and defending another person’s rights, needs, and interests. Over the years, we have understood that it is not only about presenting the solution but first understanding the issue and thinking about the child’s needs. Many children do not have birth certificates, or identity cards. This makes it difficult to get enrolment in schools and then the web of poverty continues.
ADOPT A CENTRE
Tara Foundation’s core mission is to help every student, especially the underprivileged ones, to achieve academic success. Disadvantaged students from the lower economic strata have much fewer opportunities to do well in life and often, education may be the only way for them to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty. Sadly, many of them face even more obstacles to academic success than their privileged peers.
Many B40 families struggle to pay for basic necessities, and cannot afford to spend much on education to help their children, especially with the high, rising costs of education in Malaysia. Underprivileged children may never realise their full potential and can continue to be trapped in the poverty cycle for the rest of their lives & for generations to come.
It is a fact that a disproportionate number of students from prestigious schools come from affluent backgrounds. Parents with higher incomes tend to spend MORE THAN TRIPLE on education for their children, compared to those with lower incomes.
Children from wealthier families have greater access to resources. Less-educated parents with lower incomes spend lesser and place lesser emphasis on education as survival is the key goal. Help us level the playing field and end educational inequality.
How can we solve this problem together ?
We set up “Gurukulams” (free daily tuition centers) right within the B40 clusters. Our concept is, “We go to the poor, instead of the poor coming to us”. We make sure all our centers are within walking distance ensuring ease of access for the B40 kids. We focus on “early intervention”, as we start with the kids as early as 6 years old. Our priority is giving them a very solid foundation. At these centers, we provide daily free tuition classes, free daily lunch and tea, non academic activities like sports, education in human values, Yoga, excursions, etc.
How can you help?
We currently have 16 Gurukulams/Centers all over Malaysia, moslyt adopted by well-wishers. We would like to expand, reach out to more B40 clusters, change the lives of more kids…We require about RM6,000 per month to run each center targeted at poor underprivileged kids.
Can you or your organisation support us? All your contributions are tax deductible. Let’s come together to make a real difference.
BE OUR VOLUNTEER
Are you good at teaching and have a passion in helping children? Get out of a rut. If you feel you are eligible and can teach and handle children well, sign up at TARA and become our educator. Let’s shift gears and spend time focusing on others for a while. You’ll probably even get to meet new people who like to do the same things as you. We need teachers who can stay optimistic and don’t put off doing what needs be done.
It’s easy to be tempted to think, “I’ll get to it later,” but in many cases, “later” never comes. As a volunteer at TARA, it should be your priority to make sure the students get some studying done at the gurukulam. If you notice that the students are struggling with a particular topic, prioritize them at that time and maintain a positive attitude. However, we also participate in activities that provide us with brief distractions from our studying. Because the brains of children need time to rest and process the information they have taken in, we take a break every hour for ten minutes. When students are having difficulties understanding a particular subject, it is a good idea to give them a short break so that they can come back to it with a clearer head.
Additionally, we need teachers to assist the students in reading according to their passing standards despite their age. A 12-year-old student can only pass through Level 3 exams. Yes, we teach students according to their knowledge and groom them upwards. Find out which chapters Tara volunteers or the instructor plans to cover the next day, and make sure you’ve read it before you go to class. Students will have a better understanding of the material and will be able to identify areas in which they require further clarification by asking questions.
The early preparation of our students for quizzes and examinations is strongly encouraged. Students who have exams coming up should begin studying anywhere within three days to one week before the exam. Create a study schedule, divide their time up into sections, and ensure that they stick to the schedule. Do not put off studying until the night before the exam because cramming does not give the brain enough time to completely process the information.
TARA Foundation makes topical mind maps to assist students in their acquisition of new information. Students are able to remember new information better when it is placed in context through the use of mind maps, which help them make connections between new and previously learned information. When they are required to come up with ideas for significant projects, they will find that this exercise is especially helpful. In order to generate a mind map, we first write the topic in the middle of the page, then we add lines that go in a variety of directions. Finally, we write our ideas on top of the lines.

TARA FOUNDATION – “Transforming Lives, Starting Young”
TARA, meaning “Star”, is a non-governmental organization since 2002. Like its name, it shines a bright future in uplifting the lives of underprivileged children and families.
Tara Foundation was registered in 2002 and is 23 years young.
Tara Foundation started its journey initially by establishing a Shelter Home known as Tara Bhavan in Kampung Kasipillai, Jalan Ipoh. Tara Bhavan was Home for approximately 45 children, both boys and girls. It provided shelter, education, food, clothing and self developments programs like Computer Training and Sports for the Children.
Over the initial 15 years we also ran an outreach program whereby we adopted 50 Families in the B40 areas around Kuala Lumpur. These families, mostly economically challenged for various reasons, were provided with rations every month to ensure that the children of the families did not have to drop out of school at early age to start work to support the family.
Most of these families were broken families, single parents or even no parents. Many of these children were being brought up by their equally poor and un-educated grandparents.
The focus of Tara Foundation has always been to provide education to the younger children.
Over the 15 years of operations, Tara Bhavan would be amongst the early ones at any disaster sites like flood and fires to provide necessary support for the effected families.
In the year 2019 where we established our first “Gurukulam” or “Education Centre” inside the vicinity of the B40 area. These Education Centres (aka Gurukulams) have grown phenomenally to 21 Centres as as of May 2023.
The Education Centres (aka Gurukulams) have grown phenomenally to 16 Centres as at Feb 2023. The demand seem to be phenomenal and the Education Centres are growing at a phenomenal rate. Over the last 3 months, the growth has been at an average of 3 centres every month
We firmly believe in this 3 point principle as we continue to grow the Education Centres:
- Focus on Early Education
- Focus on the B40 Community.
- We go to those who need us, not wait for them to come to us.
We organize tutoring classes as well as provide safe places for enrichment activities. These children are brought on field trips to widen their perspectives on what is around them. Coming from underprivileged families, we provide a support system to enable them to achieve a success story that even we always dreamt of. Currently providing education to over 800 kids across 21 centers in Malaysia, we aim to extend our hand and help more children living in challenging environments to be inspired and excel.
